My therapist once told me that people tend to self harm for the adrenaline. If you’re having extreme negative emotions, such as sadness or anger, your body will want to try to fix it.
Your brain will send messages to the rest of you to help get that adrenaline going, to calm you down, and counteract the negative emotions.
It is no different than an angry person hitting a wall. Someone screaming. Having ‘mad’ sex. Etc.
Knowing this has really helped me a ton and I hope it will help others.
